ashutosh potdar

I’m an Indian writer of one-act and full-length plays, poems, short fiction, translations, and scholarly essays.​ I write in both Marathi and English.
 

My writing in Marathi and English grows out of the belief that creative expression and critical reflection are inseparable ways of understanding the world. Whether I am working on a play, a poem, an essay, or an edited volume, I return to questions of bhavtal​, the wider emotional and cultural ground on which an ever-evolving world and human relationships are formed and negotiated.
 

I am drawn to the spaces where text, performance, memory, socio-political context, and everyday life intersect. This is why my plays often explore the dynamics of rural–urban experience, desire, and power through irony, intimacy, and social awareness. My translations and adaptations​, from Jean Genet to contemporary playwrights​, emerge from an interest in how global ideas can be reimagined within specific cultural landscapes, and how languages speak to one another across contexts.
 

Collaboration is central to my practice. Working with co-authors, performers, and directors has shaped my understanding of drama as a collective mode of thinking—one that grows through dialogue, experimentation, and shared processes. This collaborative ethos also informs my editorial and research work, where I bring together diverse voices to rethink archives, histories, literary practices, and artistic traditions.
 

As a faculty member in literature and drama at FLAME University, Pune, my teaching and pedagogy extend these commitments. I encourage students to think beyond disciplinary boundaries and to engage with the wider worldviews that shape literary and dramatic forms. In the classroom, I focus on facilitating processes that help students understand how texts and performances are made, how they circulate, and how they invite multiple ways of reading and interpretation.
 

My involvement with हाकारा । hākārā, the bilingual online journal in Marathi and English that I co-publish and edit, reinforces my interest in the porous boundaries between artistic practice and critical inquiry. The journal offers a space where creative and analytical expressions coexist, opening up new conversations about contemporary cultural practices.
 

Across all my work​: as a writer, teacher, editor, and researcher​, I remain committed to language as a way of listening and responding: to people, places, stories, and the emotional textures of lived experience.
